City of Norway

Norway is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, about 90 miles north of Green Bay, at the junction of US 2 and US8. It's in Dickinson County, about nine miles east of Iron Mountain, and just about two miles north of the Menominee River, which defines our border with Wisconsin. Piers Gorge, a well-known stretch of whitewater, is just outside our city limits. Raft trips are available during the summer, and kayak enthusiasts are frequently seen testing their skills in this beautiful setting. Read more about Norway on the city's own website.

The community of Norway has had its own healthcare facilities throughout its history. With the opening of the Anderson Memorial Medical Center in January 2001, this tradition continues. A brief history of AMMC is included on another page.

Always a progressive community, Norway had its own municipal hydroelectric plant before 1900, and has continuously upgraded it and maintained it. Today, Norway is one of very few communities in the U.S. with its own hydro plant. Norway was one of the first communities in this area to have all-dial phone service, which was implemented in the late 1930s. By the mid 1950s, community antenna TV (CATV) was made available to every home.

Norway's population has held at about 3,000 for many years. Always a community of well-kept homes, Norway continues to see new construction, as well as upgrading of older businesses and residences. It's also the home of the Dickinson County Fairgrounds. And it's seen the development of some excellent walking paths in recent years.
